'Sorcerer' sarpanch's dera razed

punjab Updated: Aug 28, 2012 00:57 IST

Giani Jagtar Singh Jachak, former head priest of Harmandar Sahib, and his supporters demolished various structures at the dera of murder-accused sarpanch Pal Kaur on Monday evening.

"Sorcerer" Pal Kaur had been arrested last week after she beat Veerpal Kaur (13) of Manawan village to death on the dera premises on August 22 while purportedly trying to exorcise an evil spirit.

"Giani Jachak reached the dera and announced on the loudspeaker that he had come to demolish samadhis and dargah of Baba Gugga Jahar Peer," said Pritam Singh, a resident of Bhinder Kalan. Subsequently, Jachak's supporters swung into action with the help of villagers.

Jachak also exhorted villagers to shun superstition and exorcism. "Residents of Bhinder Kalan and surrounding areas should boycott sorcerers," he said.

Meanwhile, the Dharamkot police produced Pal Kaur, her husband Darbara Singh, Sewak Singh, all residents of Bhinder Kalan, and Mukhtiar Singh of Mari Mustafa village in the local court, which remanded them in 14-day judicial custody.
