The state government plans to conduct special medical entrance test for Non-Resident Indian (NRI) candidates desirous of taking admission in bachelor of medicine and bachelor of surgery (MBBS) or bachelor in dental surgery (BDS) courses.

The government has come up with a special offer for NRI candidates to fill up the stipulated NRI seats in both private and government medical colleges.

Principal secretary, medical education and research, Vini Mahajan, said Baba Farid University of Health Sciences (BFUHS) vice-chancellor has already been directed to make all arrangements in order to conduct special entrance test for NRI students for their admission in the coming academic session.

"After admitting NEET-qualified NRI students, the vacant seats will be filled separately through a special entrance test in all medical colleges. BFUHS authorities have been directed to invite applications from aspirants," Mahajan said, who was here at Government Rajindra Medical College and Hospital for inauguration of ward number 1.

There are around 2,500 MBBS and BDS seats across the state and each college has 15% seats reserved for NRI candidates. In the past, the vacant NRI seats were being filled by converting them as genral category seats or through management quota.

Hefty fee structure for NRI students had always remained a lucrative source of income for the colleges.

"The special entrance test will help fill all NRI seats in the colleges," Mahajan said.

Meanwhile, despite Supreme Court's verdict to quash NEET, the state government has decided to go by the NEET merit for admissions in different medical courses, including bachelor of medicine and bachelor of surgery (MBBS), bachelor in dental surgery (BDS), doctorate of medicine (MD), master in surgery (MS) and master in dental surgery (MDS).
