A speeding car claimed the lives of two cousins on the Nabha Road in Bhadson in Patiala on Sunday night.

The victims have been identified as Gurbachan Singh, 23, resident of Rampur Channa village, and Manpreet Singh, 21, a native of Babarpur.

Their relative Gurvinder Singh said Gurbachan and Manpreet were on their way to the former’s house on a tractor-trolley.

However, their vehicle developed a snag a few kilometres away from their destination, forcing them to stop and take a look at it.

While they were trying to repair the glitch on the roadside, a speeding car rammed into the stationary tractor-trolley, leaving the cousins seriously injured. The car driver managed to flee the spot.

Gurvinder said passers-by identified the victims through the IDs in their pockets and informed the family, who reached the accident scene and sounded the police.

The victims were rushed to a nearby hospital, where the doctors declared them brought dead.

Following the complaint of Gurvinder, the police have registered a case against the unidentified car driver under Sections 279 (rash driving) and 304-A (death due to negligence) of the Indian Penal Code (IPC).

The police said investigation was on to trace the accused.
