A speeding mini-bus mowed down a 70-year-old cyclist to death near the fire brigade office near Jagraon Bridge on Sunday afternoon.

The driver of the bus fled, leaving the vehicle on the road, due to which traffic on the road stretch remained affected for at least one hour.

The Division Number 1 police reached the spot and confiscated the bus and nabbed its conductor.

The deceased, Surjit Singh, a resident of Karimpura area, was pedalling back home after attending a religious programme near Bharat Nagar Chowk.

Assistant sub-inspector (ASI) Ashwani Kumar, who is investigating the case, said Surjit was crossing the road, when the speeding mini-bus ran over him.

He said efforts were on to arrest the bus driver, who has been booked for reckless driving and causing death due to negligence.
