A youth in his mid-twenties was killed, while his friend was seriously injured, after a speeding truck hit the motorcycle that they were riding at Bhadson on Thursday.
The deceased, Satnam Singh, and injured Dilpreet Singh are both natives of Khanauri village in Patiala.
Satnam’s father Dalbara Singh said his son and his friend were on their way back home via the Bhadson highway. As they reached near the Bhadson toll plaza, a speeding truck hit them from the rear. The truck driver managed to flee the scene while leaving the vehicle behind.
Passers-by rushed the victims to a nearby hospital where Satnam was declared brought dead, while Dilpreet is critical.
The police said preliminary investigation revealed that the truck driver lost control over his vehicle due to speeding that led to the accident.
The victim’s body was handed over to the family after autopsy.
A case under Sections 279 (rash driving), 304-A (death due to negligence), 337 (causing hurt by act endangering life or personal safety of others) and 427 (mischief causing damage to the amount of fifty rupees) of the Indian Penal Code (IPC) has been registered.
The truck had been taken into custody and investigation was on to identify and trace its driver, the police said.
