A seven-year-old boy, purchasing a balloon from a hawker, was allegedly mowed down by a speedy car on Dugri Road on Friday evening.
The victim, Rahul, a resident of Dr Ambedkar Nagar, was returning home with his father after watching Dussehra celebrations.
The accused, Jagjeet Singh of Model Town Extension, tried to flee the spot, but was nabbed by passersby and handed over to the police.
Ashok Kumar, father of deceased, said they were returning after visiting Dussehra Mela at Dugri ground. As they reached the Dugri road, they stopped to buy a balloon for Rahul. Meanwhile, a speedy car rammed into his son and ran over him.
Rahul suffered multiple injuries and was rushed to a nearby hospital where he succumbed to his injuries. Meanwhile, Model Town police reached the spot and arrested the car driver.
A case has been registered against the accused under section 279 (reckless driving) and 304A (causing death due to negligence) of the Indian Penal Code (IPC) at Model Town police station.
An eyewitness claimed that the car driver was driving rashly under the influence of liquor.
