A 25-year-old stabbing victim, whose family could not afford her treatment, succumbed to her injuries at her house in New Vishnupuri on Thursday.
The victim, Pooja, was allegedly stabbed eight times by her ex-husband, Raman Kumar, 26, of Ekta Colony on May 28. Though he fled the spot, the accused was arrested on May 30 and sent to Ludhiana central jail on judicial remand.
Pooja, who received grievous injuries in the attack, was rushed to Lord Mahavira Civil Hospital, where doctors, sensing her condition, referred her to PGIMER, Chandigarh.
However, at Post-Graduate Institute of Medical Education and Research (PGIMER), Chandigarh, after getting her treated initially, her family could no longer afford her treatment, and opted to bring her back home on June 4. After struggling for life for a week, she succumbed to her injuries on Thursday.
After her death, the police added section 302 (murder) in the FIR registered against her ex-husband, Raman Kumar.
When contacted, PGIMER spokesperson Manju Wadwalkar said she was unaware of the case. But she would look into the matter on Saturday.
The case was registered following the statement of Sunny, Pooja’s husband, who is a labourer.
Pooja had married Raman around three years ago and has a two-year-old son from the marriage.
However, the couple’s relationship turned sour, and they got divorced six months ago.
A month later, Pooja married Sunny. Sub-inspector Kuldeep Singh said Raman possessed a grudge against Pooja for divorcing him, and therefore attacked her.
