As the festive fever picks up in the city, officials turn a blind eye towards violations by shopkeepers who set up stalls in the parking areas in different markets, leading to traffic chaos on the SAS Nagar roads.
Keeping in view the festival season, the SAS Nagar municipal corporation (MC) had allowed shopkeepers to set up stalls in the corridors and road berms till Diwali. The municipal corporation’s decision to allow the stalls in the corridors and road berms has derailed the anti-encroachment drive of the civic body.
Throwing the norms to the wind, the stalls have been set up in the parking areas, forcing the residents and visitors to park their vehicles on the roads, leading to chaos in the markets.
In many markets of the city, sweets shops have covered up entire corridors in front of their shops, leaving no space for people to walk. “Keeping the festival season in mind, we have allowed the city shopkeepers to set up stalls only in the corridors, but no permission has been given for setting up stalls in the parking,” said SAS Nagar mayor Kulwant Singh.
