State goverment honours 383 sportspersons with cash awards

In a bid to promote sports in the state, Punjab irrigation minister Sharanjeet Singh Dhillon gave cash awards to 383 sportspersons, who have brought laurels to the district in national as well as international events on Saturday.

The function was held at the Punjab Agricultural University's Pal Auditorium where Dhillon was the chief guest. Rs 56,75,300 was distributed among 383 sportspersons during the district-level event.

Dhillon, while addressing the gathering, said, for strengthening the overall sports culture and infrastructure, the state government has announced a special fund of Rs 200 crore towards sports upliftment.

He said that the state is committed to promote sports. As many as 125 sports achievers were given jobs in different sectors in past one year. Sport is being promoted by organising Kabaddi World Cups.

During the function, Rs 8,05,800 was distributed amongst 53 achievers of year 2010-11, Rs 11,18,600 to 59 sportspersons of 2011-12, Rs 10,42,900 to 77 sportspersons of 2012-13 and Rs 27,75,300 to 194 achievers of 2013-14 and 2014-15.

During the function, 15-year-old Rajvir Singh, a resident of Siarh village of the district, who has made the district proud by clinching two gold medals in cycling events held at Special Olympics World Games held in Los Angeles (USA), was also honoured along with world champion boxer Mandeep Kaur and NBA star Satnam Singh Bhamra's father.

Additional deputy commissioner (general) Kuldip Singh Vaid, ADCP (crime) Mukhwinder Singh Bhullar, district sports officer Satpal Singh, Teja Singh Dhaliwal, general secretary, Punjab Basketball Association were among the dignitaries who were present at the occasion.

Meanwhile, sports enthusiasts appeared to unhappy over the short stay of Dhillon at the venue. Most of them said the minister spent just few moments to complete mere formalities of the event and then left immediately.
