The Congress workers led by the party's spokesperson Sukhpal Khaira staged a protest at local grain market here on Friday.
Lashing out at the SAD-BJP government, Khaira said it was a matter of great shame for junior Badal that while poor farmers were being blatantly looted by the state government in grain markets of Punjab, he had preferred to enjoy the warm hospitality of corporate honchos like Tata, Birla and Mahindra in Mumbai.
Khaira said the farmers, who were first forced by the SAD-BJP government to sow the varieties of PUSA 144 and PUSA 122, were now being denied the MSP (minimum support price) of `1,345 and were being forced to distress sale of their crop at `300-400 below the fixed MSP.
Citing an example of sheer frustration and dejection among the farmers, Khaira said that Harbans Singh of Mand Talwandi village died of a heart attack in Ibrahimwal Mandi few days ago due to his inability of selling the paddy crop.
Khaira said: “Though the SAD drew political strength from the farmers of Punjab, when it comes to paying them back, the Badal duo has always left them in lurch and at the mercy of God.”
Khaira advised Sukhbir Badal to cut short his Mumbai visit and take stock of the procurement process by visiting the mandi's of the state to provide relief to the struggling farmers.
