In an attempt to popularise shooting as a sport at grassroots level, an Inter School Championship will be held at Gobind College, Narangwal, in Ludhiana from August 23 to 25.
Punjab Rifle Shooting Association (PRSA) will organise the event, in which nearly Rs 10 lakh will be awarded to winners as the prize money. This would be the 14th edition of the Inter-School Shooting Championship.
The first prize will carry a cash award of Rs 21,000, while the second prize winner will get Rs 15,000 and Rs 11,000 will be given to the third prize winner along with a gold, silver and bronze medal, respectively.
As many as 200 students representing 90 schools will take part in the championship. The government has made arrangements for the boarding and lodging.
Renowned shooter Ronjan Sodhi, a recipient of the Arjuna award, will interact with participants on the concluding day and encourage them to excel in the sport.
Disclosing this here on Wednesday a government spokesman said that shooting as a sport would be given due importance and world-class infrastructure would be created for rifle shooters in state.
He added that to begin with, the PRSA would set up shooting ranges in Amritsar, Bathinda, SAS Nagar and Ludhiana and similar infrastructure would be created at other places as well.
Sharanjit Singh Dhillon, PWD minister, Punjab, will inaugurate the event, while revenue minister Bikram Singh Majithia, and education minister Sikandar Singh Maluka would be the chief guests on the concluding day.
