With the winds of a cash crisis blowing over the local municipal corporation, its Friday budget meeting is likely to be stormy, with the Congress councillors planning to confront the mayor over lack of development and resources.

The MC with a total income not more than Rs 282 crore proposes to pass a budget of Rs 390 crore, planning to cover the deficit of Rs 108 crore with loans from Housing and Urban Development Cor poration (HUDCO) and various banks. Congress councillors led by leader of Opposition Rajkanwal Preet Pal Singh Lucky termed the budget “a fraud”.

“The mayor has proposed Rs 91 crore for development, while out of Rs 282 crore, Rs 218 crore is establishment expenses, Rs 65 crore committed expenses, and Rs 15 crore contingency expenses,” said Lucky. He added that the actual scenario was that the MC was in a poor financial condition.

“The Akalis talk about development but the agenda for Friday’s budget meeting has taken the veil off their claims,” said the Opposition leader in the House. Lucky recalled that even outgoing parliamentarian Navjot Singh Sidhu had exposed the lack of development in the city and pointed to bare foundation stones all over.
