The death of a stray female dog and four pups here has drawn the attention of Union minister Maneka Gandhi, who has directed Punjab Police to lodge a case against “erring” municipal corporation officials. Following a phone call from the minister, police immediately got the autopsy of the canines conducted.

Sources said the dogs were found dead died in Gian Colony five days ago. Animal Care Society president Satinderpal Singh has alleged that the dogs were poisoned by MC SDO Narain Das. He alleged that the SDO was angry over the movement of stray dogs near his house. Satinderpal said he first lodged a complaint with police and after no action was taken, he shot off a letter to Maneka Gandhi.

Satinderpal also alleged that cops have leaked his complaint and he is now getting threat calls. Civil lines station house officer Bharpur Singh said they were awaiting the postmortem report before initiating any legal action. He said the chemical examination will reveal whether dogs were poisoned or not.
