Banking services were affected in the town on Wednesday as employees struck work on a call given by the United Forum of Bank Unions for a relay strike across all the public sector bank branches in the northern region.

After 2012 it was declared as the fifth biggest strike in the public sector banks, in which all the employees of these banks participated.

Under the banner of the Haryana Bank Employees' Federation, hundreds of the bank employees gathered at Surkhab Chowk and raised slogans against the central government.

Gyan Parkash, district president of the federation, said though their salary revision was overdue since November 1, 2012, the government has not been taking any step in this direction.

Many customers were caught unawares and had to return empty-handed on finding the banks closed. They were put to hardships as clearing operations suffered due to non-functioning of banks all over the state. The ATMs had also gone empty by the noon. More than `150 crore of transactions suffered on Wednesday.
