Keeping in mind about the difficulties faced by the passport applicant students in submitting the original certificates and documents due to being deposited at their educational institutions, the regional passport office has decided to waive the mandatory requirement of producing originals of certain documents while applying for fresh passports.
Talking to Hindustan Times, regional passport officer Harmanbir Singh Gill informed that a lot many such complaints were registered with the department that students were not able to show their original documents.
"Many complaint cases have been received by the passport office and concern was shown regarding non availability of original documents including birth certificates, class 10 certificate and other educational documents since these were deposited in their institutes", he said.
He added, "As per the prescribed provision, it is mandatory for fresh application case to produce original documents while submitting their passport applications. However, it has been observed that students are facing problems in submission of original documents as they are deposited with educational institutes, as is the practice followed by a majority of the educational institutions".
In view of this genuine difficulty, the RPO has decided to waive the mandatory requirement of producing originals of such documents.
He added that as an alternative, students could submit the documents, including a certificate from the recognized educational institution where the passport applicant is studying, to the effect that he or she is studying in that institution, and the original certificates are retained with the institution.
Also we need photocopies of such documents duly attested by the educational institution, where the original certificates have been retained and along with it a copy of the identity card issued by the educational institution, where the applicant is studying.
The passport office said that in case of any doubt about the genuineness of any certificate submitted by the applicant, the authorities may verify the authenticity of the certificates with educational institutions.
