The decision to increase the fee by Panjab University has cause resentment among students in Ludhiana.
College students feel that the fee hike is not justified as many poor students will find it difficult pay the contently increasing fee.
It is interesting to know that not only students but colle ge principals are also confused as the university has not clearly mentioned about the increased share of fee structure.
Esha Goyal, a student from PU affiliated college, said, “The fee hike is not justified. The higher education has become a costly affair and poor students are the ones who suffer.”
RS Jhanji, senate member and principal of AS College, Khanna, said, “Though there has been a fee hike in BA, BSc, MA courses (by 5 per cent), there is no clarity about the increased share.”
He added that as of now, they were waiting for the written directions from PU but accepted that poor students would suffer and the move was not justified.
He also said that there was no hike in the fee structure for BCom and MCom courses as in 2013, the university has send directions to increase the fee but none of the colle ges had implemented it.
“All the colleges followed the old fee structure in spite the clear directions by the university. So in actual ter ms, the fee is reduced from ` 26,000 to ` 18,000.”
Another senator, Parveen Kaur Chawla, principal, Master Tara Singh Memorial College, Ludhiana, said, “The fee hike is justified as there has been no hike for the two years and the university needs funds to pay salaries of teachers.”
However, when asked about the 5 per cent hike in courses like BA, MA, BSc, she replied, “The hike would be added to total fee of the course. For example, fee for BA course is ` 10,000 so 5% would be added to the total course fee.”
She added that they would mention all the things in detail as written information would be sent to the colleges. Chawla also said that PU V-C Arun Kumar Grover had himself said that if one is unable to pay fee, he/she would get concession from the colleges.
