Students sit on hunger strike, demand facilities in library

Fed up with the ignorant attitude of Punjabi university authorities, the students of the university under the banner of Student Federation of India (SFI) on Thursday sat on hunger strike at Bhai Kahan Singh Nabha Library in front of the university here.

The students rued that despite their repeated requests, the university authorities failed to provide them better facilities in the library.

Two students - Harpreet Singh Sivia and Jagtar Singh - started observing fast from Thursday morning.
Ruing mismanagement in the library of the university, Jaspreet Singh, a student, said: “During their massive protest on September 7 the university officials assured them of increasing area of reading hall, but nothing concrete has been done so far.”

“The students are forced to sit on the floor to study during the night time,” he said.

He said that the authorities had also failed to provide drinking water facility for the library.

Meanwhile, another protesting student Jagtar Singh said the university had not subscribed to several important magazines and journals owing to which research scholars and students preparing for competitive exams had to face a lot of difficulties.

The students also alleged that due to the shortage of Xerox machines, the library authorities had put a ban on photostat of books, giving excuses of copyright.

The members of the university research scholar association and All India Students Federation also extended their support.

“We will not call off the protest till the authorities agree to give us in written the assurance to meet our demands in stipulated timeframe,” students demanded.
