Ludhiana inspector shoots self to death, cops call it ‘accident’

A police inspector, deputed with the cyber wing, allegedly shot himself to death using his service revolver on Thursday morning.

Bhupinder Singh, 48, was a resident of Kanchan Colony near Shaheed Bhagat Singh Nagar. He was fighting a legal battle in the Punjab and Haryana high court in a matter regarding promotions of officers. Bhupinder was a patient of depression.

The inspector was rushed to Deep Hospital on Mintgumri Chowk in Model Town area, where he was declared dead. Police claimed that his death was an accident. They are further investigating the case.

The incident happened at home at around 8.30am. Family members said Bhupinder was perfectly normal when he woke up in the morning.

He dropped his kids to school. After a bath, he was getting ready for office when his wife who was in the kitchen heard a shot and rushed to the bedroom to find him lying in a pool of blood.

She rushed him to hospital with the help of relatives. He was declared dead in the hospital.

Bhupinder is survived by his wife and his 16-year-old daughter and 10-year-old son. The inspector was also suffering from backache for many months now.

His last rites were carried out at the cremation ground in Model Town Extension, where his family was joined by police officers from Ludhiana and other districts.

Deputy commissioner of police, Dhruman Nimbale, said he examined the spot and it was a case of accidental fire. No case was registered. He added that the police fraternity was with the family in their grief.
