Even as the district police are yet to arrest the accused in the case of alleged suicide by a woman with her two minor daughters in Goniana last Saturday, several government officials and political people have come forward to glorify the accused, one of whom is the president of the district unit of Youth Akali Dal.
Several advertisements have appeared in different vernacular newspapers bearing names of the accused people, expressing grief over the deaths and informing the general public about the bhog ceremony to be held on Sunday at Goniana Kalan. However, these advertisements have allegedly not been issued by the accused but by their well-wishers.
The advertisements that have appeared in Saturday's newspapers bear names of the accused, including the victim's husband Gurlal Singh Brar, his father Balkar Singh Brar, who is also district Youth Akali Dal president, his wife Rupinder Kaur, Balkar's brothers Ikktar Singh Brar and Onkar Singh Brar and their wives Jasbir Kaur and Gaganpreet Kaur.
Apparently, with a purpose to appease the ruling establishment, an advertisement in a vernacular paper bears the names of the district mandi officer (DMO) Kuldeep Singh Brar, secretaries of market committees of Bathinda Harpyar Singh, Goniana - Gurbaj Singh Mann, Rama Mandi - Sukhwinder Singh Jatana, Bhucho - Gurwinder Singh, Talwandi Sabo - Harpreet Singh, Maur Mandi - Rajnish Goyal, Sangat Mandi - Chaudhari Ram Niwas, Bhagta - Gaurav Kumar Garg.
The DMO, however, expressed ignorance of the advertisement and said that he was not asked about it and he will have to inquire who got his name published as he was not even remotely related to the family. Gurbaj Singh said that he knew the family personally so gave consent for his name in the advertisement. Goyal also expressed ignorance of his name in the advertisement.
Similarly, an advertisement in another vernacular newspaper, issued by Gurlabh Singh, sarpanch of Pehelwan village, has names of all the accused whereas another advertisement bears the names of several religious leaders and residents of Goniana area along with those of accused persons.
Meanwhile, parents of the victim woman organised a separate bhog ceremony in Fatehgarh village near Talwandi Sabo on Sunday.
SHO, Nehianwala police station, Sandeep Singh, said that police teams were conducting raids at the possible hideouts of the accused and they will be nabbed soon. SSP, Bathinda, Gurpreet Singh Bhullar said that the mention of names of the accused in advertisements is immaterial and claimed that a special investigation team is investigating the matter and all the accused will be nabbed soon.
Bodies of victims Amanpreet Kaur (32) and her two daughters Guneet Kaur (4) and Mehreen Kaur (1) were found in a water tank in Goniana last Saturday morning. Based on a complaint by Karamjit Singh, victim woman's father, the police have booked all the accused under Section 304 B of IPC for forcing the woman to commit suicide along with her minor daughters.
