A Congress leader Malkiat Singh, who lost to deputy chief minister Sukhbir Singh Badal in the last assembly election at Jalalabad, is under arrest on a charge of running a sex racket.

A head constable in the police; six couples, including two minor girls; and two hotel owners are in custody together with the leader. "The network ran flesh trade in some local hotels," said senior superintendent of police Hardiyal Singh Mann. "Based on a secret input, deputy superintendent of police Jagjit Singh Saroa led a raid on these places in the cantonment area on Sunday afternoon."

Apprehended Congress leader Malkiat Singh is from Setha Wala village in Mamdot rural jurisdiction of Ferozepur. The party put him opposite Sukhbir when it denied ticket to former minister Hans Raj Jossan for the contest in Fazilka district.

Head constable Gurbachan Singh of Mamdot; Sunny of Guruharsahai; Jyoti of Barre Kee village, Sanju of Guruharsahai; Jyoti of Ferozepur City; Satnam Singh of Norang Kee Siyal village; Jeeto of Dulle Wala; Jasvir Kaur of Jodhpur village; and Sukhpreet Kaur of Jagraon are co-suspects in the case of immoral trafficking, in which hotel owners Narinder Kumar and Ashok Kumar are also under arrest.

"The police are unsure if the suspects, including Malkiat Singh, are sex racketeers or their clients," said the SSP. "We had a report that minor girls had been pushed into flesh trade, and the recovery of two may have proved it. If the charge sticks, Section 376 (rape) of the Indian Penal Code (IPC) will be added to the case report."
