Despite the assurance of deputy chief minister Sukhbir Singh Badal to start the project of mechanised sweeping and washing of main roads in January, the project is hanging fire.
As a result, city roads continue to be covered with dust and filth.
During his visit to Ludhiana in October 2013, Sukhbir Singh Badal had reviewed the status of ongoing development works in Ludhiana, and said that mechanised sweeping and washing of main roads in Ludhiana was finalised and work would start in January 2014.
Under this project the roads will be cleaned with the help of high pressure jet-cleaning machines. As municipal corporation (MC) has repeatedly faced criticism for not cleaning roads properly, despite safai sevaks, the project was conceived to keep city roads clean.
However, the project never saw the day of light, and now, due to implementation of the model code of conduct in view of the Lok Sabha elections, the project cannot be started until after the elections.
Gurpreet Gogi, a councillor of ward number 53, said, “The promises to start projects are just like showing dreams to residents. The MC has no funds to buy the required equipment to start such projects. If any project is proposed, it should be completed within deadline.
The city roads are in bad conditions, but the MC has neither repaired the roads nor taken steps to maintain them.”
Similarly, Sharandeep Singh, a resident, said, “The MC should ensure that the projects should be started in time otherwise they should not assure residents of any projects.”
Amarjeet Singh Sekhon, chief of health and sanitation wing, MC, said, “The project will hopefully start after the elections, as we have recently issued the advertisement to invite interested firms for the cleaning project.”
Sekhon said several main roads, including Chandigarh Road, Ferozepur Road, National Highway 1 and Gill Road, would be cleaned with the machines, adding that the MC would not buy the machines, but the project's contract would be given to a company that would be paid a fixed amount.
About 78km road stretch will be covered under this project, he further added.
