Crying foul over the rejection of a privilege motion moved against the deputy chief minister on Friday, Congress leader Sunil Jakhar said Sukhbir Singh Badal has been making false promises to the people of Punjab since 2013.

“First, he (Sukhbir) promised to give civic amenities, such as streetlights, water supply and sewerage system, to all cities and towns of Punjab within a fixed period. He made a similar promise in 2014 and repeated it in March this year, but urban areas in the state continue to suffer due to lack of facilities,” said Jakhar, talking to mediapersons.

The Congress legislator said the government has been making huge claims of having spent crores on development works in cities, but it was a mere propaganda. “There is a huge difference between funds received from the Centre under the Atal Mission for Rejuvenation and Urban Transformation (Amrut) and the government’s claims about the money spent on urban areas,” he said, demanding a probe into the mater.

Reacting to the allegations, the deputy CM said Jakhar has been sidelined within his own party and has developed a habit of talking without facts to hog the limelight. “The funds being used in 160 cities for laying sewerage system belong to the state government and not the Centre. JNNURM ended long back and has been replaced by Amrut. The funds we are getting under this new scheme are limited,” he said.
