Accomplices and supporters of gangster Lovely Lamba went on a rampage after the police arrested him from the lottery market near Clock Tower chowk on Sunday evening.
More than 100 accomplices and supporters of Lamba forcefully closed down the shops at Clock Tower market and Chaura Bazaar and opened fire in the air.
They also vandalised shops and vehicles, and blocked traffic near Clock Tower chowk. The police resorted to lathicharge to disperse the miscreants. The traffic remained disrupted in the area for 40 minutes.
Heavy police force was deployed in the area as tension prevailed their even after the incident.
Deputy commissioner of police (DCP) Bhupinder Singh said the police would take action against the accused.
Lovely Lamba is facing trial in at least 10 criminal cases, including murder.
On Saturday, Lamba and his accomplices, including Jeji, Mahinder Singh Fauji, Sunil Kumar and five others, were booked by the police for assault and snatching, following a complaint by Manish Kumar of New Valmiki Nagar.
Manish had alleged that the accused stopped him in Chander Nagar area, thrashed him and snatched Rs 1,500 from him.
