The two men who had opened fire on a police party chasing them on Tuesday have been remanded in two-day police custody.
The police, after a brief encounter with four suspects, managed to arrest two of them, Ranbir Singh alias Rana and Jagroop Singh alias Roopa. But two others, Billa and Bhatti, managed to escape. The police recovered firearms and cartridges from their Indigo car.
Talking to HT, ADCP (crime) Harjit Brar said, "As per preliminary investigations, Jagroop Singh is facing various charges of attempt to murder. He had a tussle with two men named Gopi and Harry. He had also snatched a gun from a bank guard On Tuesday, Jagroop and his three accomplices were on their way to settle scores with a rival gang.
Brar said the weapons seized by the police are licensed and belong to relatives of Jagroop and Rana, claimed ADCP Brar. He said Jagroop's family had links with terrorists.
The city had witnessed a fierce encounter at about 4.30 pm on Tuesday after a police party signalled an Indigo car to stop near Fatahpur. When the car did not stop, the police started chasing it. When they intercepted the car near a closed rail crossing, the suspects started firing at the cops, who returned the fire. About 20 rounds each were fired from both sides.
Raids are being conducted to nab Billa and Bhatti.
