Two Patiala municipal corporation officials, who were suspended on November 29 for reportedly not replying to summons sent by the high court, were on Monday reinstated after an inquiry marked against them absolved them of the charge of dereliction of duty.

The two officials -executive engineer (XEN) MM Syal and law officer Ashok Vij - have been reinstated on orders of local bodies principal secretary Suresh Kumar.

The inquiry had been marked after the high court had observed that both the officials were not following its orders. Charging both the officials with dereliction of duty in a case of not paying dues to a corporation contractor, the court had also issued a notice to the local bodies principal secretary and asked him to inquire into the conduct of the two officials.

Later, the two had submitted an affidavit to the court and inquiry officials, claiming that they had never received court summons. Well-placed sources in the MC said it was found during the inquiry that the suspended officials did not receive any summon as had been said by the court, though summons were received through e-mails by the clerical staff at the office of the principal secretary. It was found during the inquiry that staff at the principal secretary's office had forgot to forward the mails to the office of the Patiala MC, the source said.

"Both the officials have been reinstated. We have received orders in this regard from the office of the principal secretary of the local bodies department," Patiala MC commissioner Gurlavleen Singh Sidhu said, while talking to Hindustan Times.

After the reinstatement of these officials, the additional charges of XEN, given to sub-divisional officer Harkiran Singh, and additional charges of law officer, given to the law officer of Bathinda municipal corporation, Sanjay Soni, have been taken back.
