The Shaheed-e-Azam Bhagat Singh Memorial Bridge across the Sutlej river is to get illuminated by solar energy.
For this work on this bridge on the Macchiwara-Khanna road passing from district, the administration has released Rs 11.36 lakh to Punjab Energy Development Authority (PEDA). The bridge was inaugurated in 2007 but the electricity poles on it still don't have lights and commuters over it are forced to drive in the dark at night.
This bridge was a major passage to Delhi via Khanna, said deputy commissioner Anindita Mitra said, adding that it was also on way to Jalandhar, and Hoshiarpur-Pathankot via Nawanshahr, and the darkness over it was reflecting on the administration's reluctance.
Asked to explain the reason, the public works department said there was a problem of paying recurring power bills for installing and operating the lights.
The deputy commissioner decided to use money from the district innovative funds for this purpose.
"Finally, a cheque for Rs 11.36 lakh has reached PEDA for placing order to the company for lights at subsidised rates," said the DC, hoping the work would be over in two months. It will also help the purpose of secutirty, as the bridge is on the boundary of Ludhiana and Nawanshahr districts.
