Hundreds of acres of agriculture land in various villages of Anandpur Sahib sub-division were inundated due to increased flow of water in Sutlej river, following heavy rains in the region.
It may be mentioned that Bhakra Beas Management Board (BBMB) is releasing about 19,000 cusecs of water in Sutlej and following incessant rain in the hill, about 14,000 cusecs water was flowing in the Swan rivulet, which merges in Sutlej near Anandpur Sahib.
Due to increased flow of water in Sutlej, the agriculture fields of villages, including Laudipur, Burj Mataur, Hariwal,Dasgrain, Ballowal, Mehndli Kalan, Lower Baddal, Nikkuwal and Chandpur Bela were inundated.
Earlier on July 17 last, the water had entered the fields of these villages due to increased flow of water in Sutlej. Following this, Anandpur Sahib Member of Parliament Prem Singh Chandumajra and Rupnagar deputy commissioner had also visited the affected areas.
Chandumajra had announced that Union water resources minister Uma Bharti had principally accepted the Rs 288-crore project to channelise the Swan river in Punjab area.
Anandpur Sahib sub-divisional magistrate (SDM) Amarjit Bains said the BBMB authorities had been asked to reduce the discharge of water from Bhakra dam downstream Sutlej, keeping in view the increased flow of water in Swan rivulet.
He said that Sutlej water had been already flowing in the agriculture fields of the villages since July 17 and only the quantity of water in these fields had increased now. He said that the administration was keeping a close watch on the situation in view of the forecast of more rains in the region in the coming days.
