Talwandi cremated with state honours

Veteran Akali leader Jagdev Singh Talwandi was cremated with full state honours at his ancestral village Talwandi Rai in this district on Saturday.

Veteran Akali leader Jagdev Singh Talwandi was cremated with full state honours at his ancestral village Talwandi Rai in this district on Saturday.

A galaxy of top political leaders from the state, including chief minister Parkash Singh Badal, attended the cremation.

A contingent of Punjab Police reversed their arms and fired in the air as a mark of respect to the 85-year-old leader who had died at Dayanand Medical College and Hospital here on Friday morning.

Following the prayers, the pyre was lit by Talwandi’s elder son Ranjit Singh in the presence of deceased’s wife Mohinder Kaur, younger son Jagjit Singh, and daughters Manjit Kaur and Harjit Kaur.

A large number of his followers accompanied the vehicle that carried Talwandi’s body from his house to the cremation ground. People had started pouring in at the village since morning to have one last glimpse of their leader.

While talking to mediapersons, chief minister Parkash Singh Badal said Talwandi’s death was a big personal loss to him. When asked if a memorial would be raised to Talwandi, Badal said he would discuss it with the family.

Assembly speaker Charanjit Singh Atwal said the death of the ‘Loh Purush’ was a great loss. Congress leader KK Bawa said Talwandi was a great leader and it was a great loss to the state.

Those present at the cremation included SGPC president Avtar Singh Makkar, ministers Sharanjit Singh Dhillon, Tota Singh, Daljit Singh Cheema and Parminder Singh Dhindsa besides MPs Prem Singh Chandumajra and Ravneet Singh Bittu.
