Two women, Pawanpreet Kaur and Harpreet Kaur, were detained on Tuesday in connection with the firing in which a Dalit man was killed and his brother injured at Palasaur village near here on Monday even as the key accused are still on the run.
Shiromani Akali Dal (SAD) sarpanch Gurpreet Singh alias Babbu and his associates were booked for allegedly gunning down 33-year-old Surjit Singh and injuring his brother Jaswant Singh, both of them were also associated with SAD.
The two women, also residents of Palasaur, were also named in the FIR.
Around 40 to 50 assailants, led by Babbu, allegedly stormed into the victims’ house on Monday morning and opened fire at them. They reportedly fired around 25 gunshots.
Senior superintendent of police (SSP) Harjit Singh said, “As members of four families were allegedly involved in the attack, four teams have been formed to arrest the accused. We will trace and nab them soon.”
He said during the preliminary investigation, the police found that licensed firearms of prime accused Babbu and his brothers had been deposited as per the election commission order. We are trying to find out how they arranged the arms,” he said.
Notably, the accused reportedly held a grudge against the Dalit family following an altercation during an election meeting on January 29. This had led to a scuffle, during which the Dalit family reportedly thrashed one member of the rival group.
