The anti-narcotics and anti-illicit liquor smuggling wing of police commissionerate, Ludhiana, held a man and recovered 250-gm opium and 22 cartons of illicit liquor from his possession, on Sunday.

The accused has been identified as Hardeep Singh, 22, a resident of Kailash Nagar, Basti Jodhewal. The accused was smuggling contrabands in his car, which has been confiscated by the police.

A case under Sections 18/61/85 Narcotic Drugs and psychotropic Substances (NDPS) Act and Sections 61/1/14 of the Excise Act has been registered against the accused at Focal Point police station in this context.

Sub-inspector Harbans Singh, incharge, anti-narcotics and anti-illicit liquor smuggling wing, said, “Police arrested the accused from a checkpoint set up at Yard Chowk, Focal Point on Sunday late, following a tip-off. The accused was passing through the area in his car.”

“The accused tried to escape, but the police held him after chasing him to a distance,” Singh said.

“The police recovered 250-gm opium and 22 cartons of illicit liquor from the car. The accused is a taxi driver. To make some easy money, he was indulged in drug peddling,” the SI said.

Singh said, “He also told the police that he got opium and liquor from two different persons, whom he doesn't know, at Sadhu Garh village of Fatehgarh Sahib. He was asked to deliver the contraband at a particular point in Ludhiana.”

“He was in this business for the past two years. More important information has been expected from the accused in questioning,” the SI said.
