Taxpayers in the city are a harried lot these days as the income tax department’s website for filing tax returns is breaking down frequently due to heavy congestion.

The last date for filing income tax returns (non-audit) is July 31, but with thousands of taxpayers logging in to file returns, the website is facing errors.

Jatinder Khurana, executive member, Indian Taxation Advocates Association, said, “Taxpayers are already having a lot of trouble with e-filing of returns being made mandatory. Most of them find it complex to file their returns online and now adding to their worries is the constant shutting down of server.”

Sanjeev Garg, executive member, Indian Taxation Advocates Association, said, “In the face of technical issues in the system for filing returns, we request the income tax department to postpone the final date for filing returns.”

Manjeet Singh Sodhi, a taxpayer, said, “Streamlining and simplification of tax laws and filing returns is the need of the hour. The introduction of technology in any department is always seen as less time consuming but on the contrary, taxpayers are facing difficulty in filing their returns this way. The income tax department should have a better alternative in order to deal with such situations.”
