According to the sources, hundreds of taxpayers in the city are awaiting their VAT refunds for over four months now.Taxpayers and tax professionals in the city are subjected to unnecessary harassment by the excise department who while citing one reason or the other kept stalling the refunds.

Taxation Young Lawyers' Association president Jatinder Khurana said, “Taxpayers' fraternity is worried as they have not received their VAT refunds since long. While the department officials every time stall the refunds citing mismatch or other reasons. Sometimes, they assert that they are in the process of refund of VAT and it shall take some more time.”

Khurana said, “Officials in the department also reasoned that the recent shuffling in top as well as mid-level positions is also the cause behind the delay in VAT refunds as the pendency of refunds and time is increasing.”

Taxpayer Balbeer Singh said, “The department is evading its responsibility citing different excuses while stalling our refunds for four months now. It is sheer lack of mismanagement on the part of department. They should make early arrangements to release VAT refunds on time.”
