A teacher of a local school found a pistol and seven bullets with a Class 7 student in the classroom on Saturday.
After the teacher informed the principal about it, the principal summoned the boy's father, a head constable, and the SHO of the area. The boy was also called to the principal's office, where his father, Balram Singh, scolded him for taking away his service pistol. The weapon was later handed over to Balram.
A police official said a lenient view was taken, considering the boy's age and his father's assurance that he would take care to ensure that this does not happen again.
Amritsar police commissioner Ram Singh said a departmental probe had been marked against Balram. "It was a 9-mm pistol. We are told that the weapon and the bullets were found in the child's schoolbag," he said.
About a year ago, a couple of boys had suffered bullet injuries after a fellow student opened fire in a rural school in the Ajnala area.
