Tehsildar, patwari sentenced to 3-year imprisonment

Additional district and sessions judge Jatinder Kaur has sentenced a tehsildar and a patwari to three-year imprisonment each for selling government land at much higher rates after purchasing it at nominal rates under the Punjab Utilisation of surplus area scheme.

The convicts, Nabha tehsildar Satinder Kumar Khera and Vinod Kumar, patwari at Naraingarh Tambua village, were also imposed a fine of Rs 25,000 each. On March 15, 2007, the vigilance bureau had registered a case against six accused under several sections of IPC 490, 420, 467, 468, 120(b) and under the Prevention of Corruption Act.

Meanwhile, two other accused in the case Rajinder Singh and Kamaljit Kaur were sentenced to two-year imprisonment each, while Gurjiwan Kaur and Gurcharan Singh got one-year jail each. During investigation, it came to the fore that the land under this project could not be sold for 15 years, but the accused put up it for sale by hiding several facts.
