The girls were students of Sunrise Academy, Sangrur, and were on their way to Bathinda to take the Staff Selection Commission exam. Four of the injured are serious.
The employees of a nearby petrol pump helped passengers get out of the overturned vehicles. The injured were shifted to the Barnala Civil Hospital by members of the mini-Sahara club and staff of 108 ambulance.
An eye-witness Gurdeep Singh claimed that the tempo driver was driving rashly and collided with the trailer as he attempted to overtake in an dangerous manner.
However, tempo driver, Joginder Singh, has pleaded innocence, claiming that the visibility was poor due to fog. .
The trailer driver led from the spot. Tapa SHO Baljinder Singh Pannu said that investigations were on.
An injured student Harjit Kaur, said, "There were 30 of us aboard the tempo." The vehicle can carry 13 passengers.
The injured are Jasbir Kaur Kohrali, Harpreet Kaur Mander, Sukhjit Kaur, Pinki Rani, Jaspreet Kaur Bhakhial, Sukhpal Kaur, Sehajvir Kaur, Sandeep Kaur, Sandeep Kaur and Gurcharandeep Kaur.
