Congress leader Sajjan Kumar, Dera Sacha Sauda head Gurmeet Ram Rahim Singh and some Shiv Sena leaders were on the hit list of the youths arrested recently as part of the terror module.

A senior police officer dealing with the investigation said on Thursday that the targets were selected by the local module and approved by its foreign-based handlers.

The officer said the arrested youths, between the age of 21 and 25, told the police during interrogation that they wanted to teach a lesson to Sajjan Kumar for his role in the anti-Sikh riots, to Dera Sacha Sauda head for hurting the sentiments of Sikhs and certain leaders of the Shiv Sena whom they held responsible for the death of Jaspal Singh during the police firing in Gurdaspur.

He said some of the arrested youths had even met deceased Jaspal Singh's father and pledged to avenge the death of his son.

Fatehgarh Sahib SSP Gurmeet Singh Chauhan said the preliminary questioning of those arrested had revealed a sinister design to revive terrorism in Punjab by foreign-based terrorists, who had motivated and financed the local modules for undertaking terrorist activities by targeting certain leaders.

He said investigations had revealed systematic funding, motivation and support to several terrorist modules through social networking sites.

According to the police officer dealing with the case, the involvement of five NRIs had been found in the case. The names of two NRIs, Gurjit Singh of New Zealand and Gurlal Singh of the UAE, had also been included in the FIR registered in the recent case as they were funding the youth. He said the police had evidence that proved the involvement of these two NRIs.

The SSP said the Amritsar police had busted a terrorist module on August 22, so they were coordinating with the Amritsar police.

The SSP said the police had also busted a gang of robbers and murderers and its four members, Rana Partap Singh, Maninderjit Singh, Tarandip Singh and Sarwan Singh, had links with the terrorist module busted by the police.
