The 5,178 Teachers Union, during a meeting at Bhai Chattar Singh Park on Sunday, burnt the effigy of the state government over the issue of regularisation. These Teacher Eligibility Test (TET) pass teachers, who came from far flung areas of the district, raised slogans against the Punjab government and demanded regular jobs.
Deep Raja, a union member, said, “We have been working for a monthly salary of Rs 6,000 per month. The government increases Rs 500 every year in our salary every year, but, with the rising inflation, we can’t survive on this meager salary. Even though we have been recruited after clearing the TET, we have been forced to struggle for the regularisation.”
He added, “As many as 3,442 teachers, who were recruited before us, have been regularised by the state government. After the recruitment of a total of 5,178 teachers, many new appointments have also been done on regular basis. Why the government is discriminating with us? The state government should issue a notification regarding our regularisation.”
