Thank Rahul for starting debate on '84 riots: minorities panel chief

Rahul Gandhi

Even though vice president of the Congress Rahul Gandhi is drawing flak over his recent statement over involvement of Congress leaders in 1984 anti-sikh riots but former chairman of the National Commission for Minorities Tarlochan Singh on Tuesday thanked Gandhi scion for his comments on anti-Sikh riots as it led to a healthy discussion across the country.

"Though Rahul took a risk following his recent statements but I shall be very thankful to Rahul Gandhi for his comments. Has he not uttered anything about the Delhi riots, such healthy debate and discussion would never have come to the fore which may now (after Gandhi's comments) expose the role of Congress politicians in orchestrating the riots", said Tarlochan, who was press secretary of then president Giani Zail Singh.

He added that though Rahul's statements had rubbed salt on wounds of riot victims but at the same time it gave answers to questions regarding whether there was any role of Congress leaders or not.

Speaking about the Delhi government's decision to constitute special investigation Team (SIT), Tarlochan said though it's a welcoming move, Arvind Kejriwal should move the Supreme Court of India to constitute a probe into the 1984 anti-Sikh riots. "The union home minister or lieutenant governor of Delhi is the only appellate authority to constitute an SIT. Moreover, central and Delhi governments have already been sitting on reports of nine SITs and commissions constituted from time to time", he said.

Tarlochan said the flaws in the Indian judicial system and unreasonable delay by different courts have delayed justice to victims and indictment of political leaders following their involvement in anti-Sikh riots. "The Supreme Court should have taken suo-moto cognizance of Rahul Gandhi's statements and should form SIT or any other commission to give justice to victims", he said.

He also praised Gurdeep Kaur, daughter of Giani Zail Singh who recently made revelations about the helplessness of her father during operation Blue Star and 1984 riots.
