It is for the third time this year when Milkfed has hiked milk prices by Rs 2 per litre from Monday. Milkfed sells milk under the brand name of Verka.
Now, one litre of standard milk of Verka (green packet) will cost Rs 38 as compared to the earlier price of Rs 36.
According to Verka officials, the prices of milk have been hiked due to shortage of milk. "We are running under severe shortage of milk supply. So the prices have been hiked to sustain the milk producer," said Parminder Singh Chalaki, chairman, Verka Milk Plant, SAS Nagar.
Earlier, two hikes of Rs 1 per litre each was witnesses in June and September. The hike will also affect the prices other products of Verka.
According to experts, it has never happened in the past two decades that prices of milk increased post Diwali season. "Generally, the demand of milk sinks after Diwali, but if the prices have been increased, it means there is some serious crisis," said an expert of dairy farming.
The expert said the prices of milk could even see further hike in the near future.
