Balwinder Singh Mavi, Congress candidate from Khera block in the zila parishad elections, on Thursday reported a threat to kill him, if he did not withdraw his nomination paper.

Thrusday was the deadline for withdrawing nominations in his constituency and he said he had received regular threats to drop out of the race or he'd be kidnapped, killed, or implicated in a false case.

At joint press conference with local Congress legislator Kuljit Singh Nagra, Mavi said the upcoming zila parishad, block samiti and panchayat elections would not be free and fair until the Shiromani Akali Dal stopped threatening candidates of the opposition.

Mavi said he could not even campaign because of threat to his life. He has filed a petition for protection in the Punjab and Haryana high court, and in spite of threat, declined to withdraw from the contest.

The police said the Fatehgarh Sahib deputy superintendent of police was looking into Mavi's allegations.
