Three children drowned on Tuesday while bathing in a pond at Gardinagar village on the Rajpura-Banur road near here. Victims Sanjeev Kumar (12), Nitin Kumar (10), and Gurdhain Singh (12) were among five children from the village who had reached the spot around 11am.
The three victims were first to jump into the pond, and had started drowning fast, Shambhu station house officer Mohinder Singh said. “Water was not deep but there were mirelike conditions in the pond,” he said. Seeing their friends drowning, two other children tried to save them but remained unsuccessful.
“They then raised an alarm that brought villagers to the spot. The rescuers took the three boys to a nearby hospital, where the doctors declared them brought dead,” said the officer. The victims’ parents were in a state of shock. The police reached the hospital and inquired about the incident but the parents refused to give permission for autopsy.
“Had there been no holiday today, boys would have been in school and the tragedy would have been averted,” Shyam Singh, father of one of the victims, said over telephone.
