The city police, on Friday, arrested four policemen under the Narcotics, Drugs and Psychotropic Substances (NDPS) Act and registered a case against them at the Sadar police station.
According to senior superintendent of police (SSP) MS Sidhu, among the four arrested three are head constables - Gurlal Singh and Charanjit Singh of Sangrur police and Raja Singh of the railway police posted at Lehra. The fourth is a Punjab home guard volunteer, Harjinder Singh, posted with Sangrur jail security. The accused were arrested with 1.8kg charas when they were travelling in a car (PB 11 N 0049). The casr has also been impounded.
According to Sidhu, the accused, around 20 days ago, had intercepted three women at Khokhar railway post near Lehra and recovered the said contraband from their possession, which the women had brought from Hansi village in Haryana.
The four struck a deal, took Rs 30,000 as bribe and let off the women without registering a case. The women, who were allowed to go, have been identified as Banso, Pammi and Chucchi of Mansa, Sangrur and Nabha, respectively.
The arrested were produced in a court which sent them on two-day police remand. The district police have arrested 139 people and registered 114 cases till date under the NDPS Act in the first quarter of the current year.
