Punjab Police arrested and later released three youth from Assam in Pathankot district three days after the recovery of an abandoned bag containing three army uniforms.

The bag was found on Defence Road near Pathankot on Sunday night. A search was launched in the district following the seizure.

Punjab Police, army and other security agencies carried out searches in the area, especially near the Indian Air Force base and the army’s Mamoon cantonment in Pathankot.

The three youth, Sunil Garh, Avinash Gogri and Bittu, all from Assam, were found roaming in the area but could not explain the reason for their presence there. SSP Vivek Sheel Soni said that the three were released after questioning. They were found to be labourers from Assam..

A Jammu flour mill’s name was printed on the bag, police said.

Security forces are on alert in the border districts following terror attacks on the Indian Air Force base in Pathankot in January 2016 and in Dinanagar town in Gurdaspur in July 2015.

Both Pathankot and Gurdaspur are on the border with Pakistan and close to Jammu and Kashmir.
