Six killed in separate road mishaps in Jalandhar

Six people were killed in three accidents during the past 24 hours in Jalandhar.

In the first incident, three youths were killed and one injured in a road mishap when a motorbike and a Hyundai Verna car collided on the PhagwaraNakodar road at Lakhanpal village, around 25km from here late Tuesday evening .

The deceased have been identified as Harjinder Kumar, 28, of Ganna village, Naveen Kumar, 25, and his friend Joban Malhotra, 19, of Kandola Kalan village. The injured Gurmukh Singh, 25, of Kandola Kalan, has been undergoing treatment at the Satyam hospital of the city.

According to the police, Harjinder was going on a Hero Splendor (PB08-CP-4947) to meet his wife Kulwinder Kaur and two daughters at her maternal house at Lakhanpal village. When he reached the main road, a white Hyundai Verna (PB08CR-3700) collided with his bike.

The car went out of control and took overturns several times before coming to a halt. Harjinder fell on the other side of the road. Naveen Kumar, who was working with a nonresident Indian as driver, was driving the car. Harjinder died on the spot while occupants of the car Naveen, Joban, and Gurmukh were seriously injured. They were rushed to the Phagwara civil hospital where Naveen and Joban succumbed to injuries.

The Sadar police handed over bodies to the families after postmortem on Wednesday morning.

In yet another accident, Rakesh Kumar, 27, and his friend Vijay Kumar, 22, of Navi Abadi were crushed to death under an unidentified speeding truck when they were going to Kartarpur on a bike outside Dr BR Ambedkar National Institute of Technology near Kartarpur on the JalandharAmritsar highway in the intervening night of Tuesday and Wednesday.

Bodies were handed over to the families and a case has been registered against unidentified vehicle driver. In another road mishap, 22-year-old Sooraj Kumar of Ajit Nagar died when his bike hit an electric pole in Chuharwali village on Jalandhar-Hoshiarpur after the victim lost control on his bike in an attempt to save a stray cow on the road on Wednesday evening.

Pillion-rider Sunny was seriously injured and admitted to a hospital. They were reportedly going to Mata Chintapurni in Himachal Pradesh.
