Three engineers killed at Himachal hydro plant

A year after Beas tregedy where 24 engineering students of Hyderabad based engineeeing college were swept away in gushing water due to opening of flood gate of 120mw Larji dam in Thalaut, three died including two engineers of Himachal Pradesh state electricity board limited when a water channel valve at 2mw Rongtong hydro power project at Kaza in Lahaul spiti on Sunday late evening.

?Deceased have been identified as Vijay Kumar (24) and Sanjay Kumar (37) both from Mandi district of Himachal and employee of state electricity board. Third one Danesh was employeee of a private company -APE power limited that had been assigned the project's renovation.All three swept away in stream of water that erupted due to bursting of valve.

The project was under renovation.

Supreintending engineer generation MK Upreti told HT that incident took place around 9pm. "We were informed about the valve bursting later came to know about death of thee person. then i informed local administration and police," Upreti told HT over telephone today morning.

Rongtong is a 2MW project that is located at 3600 meter elevation in the tribal Lahaul-Spiti district on Rongtong Nullah, a tributary of Spiti river. Water is tapped at higher elevation and diverted through around 2800meter long channel- which reportedly bursted.goverment ordered a probe to ascertain the reason.
