The Basti Jodhewal police claim to have busted a gang that used to dupe labourers using wads of fake currency notes, with the arrest of three.

The accused were also involved in snatchings, loots, burglary and vehicle lifting, the police said. The police have recovered 10 mobile phones, three motorcycles and bundles of fake currency notes from their possession.

The accused have been identified as Rajesh Kumar alias Raju of Mohalla New Satguru Nagar of Lohara, Ashok Kumar of Hargobind Nagar and Rajinder Kumar of Nirankari Mohalla.

Giving details about the arrest, assistant commissioner of police (ACP) east Satish Malhotra said the police arrested the accused following a tip-off from Sundar Nagar area on Friday.

The ACP said the accused used to lurk outside banks to target labourers coming there to deposit their hard-earned money. The accused used to show them wads of currency notes; however, the wads had notes only on the top and bottom, while the middle part comprised plain paper.

Malhotra said the accused used to concoct a story that the police were following them, and tell laborers that if they would deposit the money in their accounts, they could have half of it. In exchange, they would take the money that the labourers possessed.

The victims came to know that they had been duped only after bank officials opened the bundles.
The accused also used to snatch valuables and steal vehicles from different parts of the city.

The ACP said Rajesh Kumar alias Raju was facing trial in several criminal cases at Jagraon, Machhiwara, Division Number 1 police station, Daba and Una in Himachal Pradesh. He has also been declared a proclaimed offender in a case of hatching conspiracy of loot registered at Machhiwara in 2011 and a case of snatching at Daba police station.

Accused leaves police officials red-faced

While being produced before the media, Rajesh Kumar alias Raju said he had committed hundreds of loots, snatchings and burglaries, besides duping people. However, was arrested only two or three times. When asked how he managed to evade arrest, he replied that whenever he got caught, he used to bribe the cops, who then used to let him off. Annoyed with the statement, the police officers on the spot immediately whisked him away.
