Three held in Bathinda gangrape case

punjab Updated: Mar 02, 2013 23:21 IST

A day after a case of a Class-10 girl's abduction and rape by three youths came to light, police on Saturday reportedly arrested the suspects and recovered a luxury car, with no red-beacon on it. Malkiyat Singh, father of 17-year-old victim, had earlier alleged that the luxury car used to abduct the girl was having a red-beacon on top.

Though police have not said anything officially about the arrests, sources in the department said three people have been arrested for allegedly abducting and raping the minor.

On the February 28 night, the victim, a student of a private school in Bathinda, was allegedly abducted at around 9pm from near Bibiwala Chowk. In her statement, she had claimed that one of the accused was known to her. It was him who offered her a soft drink laced with some intoxicant, following which she fell unconscious, she added.

Later, he called two other people and they took her to some unidentified place where she was repeatedly raped, the victim said in her complaint.

Report say 10 rape cases are reported every week and 40 per month in the state. As per information obtained under the Right To Information Act, 4,974 rape cases had been registered in the past 10 years (2002-2012).

ASP (city) Alka Meena declined to speak on the arrests in the case. She, however, said, "We have almost solved the case and recovered a car. There was no beacon on the car, which was used in abduction. The victim, in her complaint, had alleged that her soft drink was spiked by one of the accused who was known to her. Later, she was taken to an unidentified place and was raped repeatedly. A case under Sections 376, 363 and 34 of the IPC has been registered against three unidentified people and they will be arrested soon."
