Three killed as car catches fire in Amritsar

Three men were burnt to death when a car they were travelling in caught fire near Manawala on National Highway 1 in this district on Wednesday at around 4.30am.

Three men were burnt to death when a car they were travelling in caught fire near Manawala on National Highway 1 in this district on Wednesday at around 4.30am.


Two victims have been identified as Surinder Singh (58) of Chaatiwind area; and Saab Singh from Mahal village in this district. The third deceased is yet to be identified.

Police said Surinder Singh was a businessman dealing in farm equipment, while Saab Singh was an auto mechanic.

Talking to HT, superintendent of police (headquarters) Jasdeep Singh said, “The incident took place at about 4.30 am. Three men were traveling in a Chevrolet Beat which caught fire near Manawala.”

He added that a case was registered and efforts were on to identify the third victim. “We will get a DNA test conducted if needed,” he said.

Police said the fire reportedly broke out due to a short circuit, and the doors also got locked.

“We have started investigation and are trying to determine the exact cause of the fire,” a police official added.
