The court of additional and sessions judge Karnail Singh on Saturday sentenced three peopleto 20 years in jail for murdering a 56-year-old trader in August 2010 to avoid paying Rs 4,000 debt.
Muktsar residents Gora Singh, Sonu and Happy were convicted for killing Kanwal Parkash Chhabra after taking him to an isolated place in Sohnewala-Vadhayian village on Jalalabad road.
Gora and Sonu together owed around Rs 4,000 to Chhabra, who sold household articles on instalment, for a cooling fan and a television set and DVD player, for which most of the payments had already been made.
On August 18, 2010, Chhabra went missing and a report was filed four days later. His body was recovered on August 28, 2010.
Later, the investigating team found that on August 18, Gora had invited Chhabra to collect the pending amount. When Chhabra visited him, Gora informed him that Sonu had also arranged money for payment.
However, Gora took Chhabra to fields near Sohnewala-Vadhayian village where Sonu and Happy were waiting. They strangulated the trader and threw him and his motorcycle into a nearby canal.
They were booked under Sections 302, 201 and 34 of the Indian Penal Code.
