Three juveniles have been arrested, while their accomplice is at large, for stalking a 16-year-old girl and harassing her over Facebook for over a year.
The accused, all aged 17, are residents of Khalsa Colony in Patiala.
In his complaint, Samanjot Singh, the paternal uncle of the victim, said the accused had been harassing his niece for over a year, and a case under relevant sections of the Information Technology Act was registered in this regard on August 22, 2015.
However, despite being booked, the accused continued to harass his niece. “The accused started stalking her and intercepting her on the way to her tuition class and also passed vulgar comments, following which they approached the police again,” Singh alleged.
He added that the accused also spread lewd rumours about his niece among her friends through a bogus Facebook account, and even threatened the victim against disclosing the matter to anyone.
Investigating officer sub-inspector Satnam Singh said they were taking the assistance of the cyber cell to procure evidence against the accused, adding that they were verifying if the accused had more accomplices.
A case under Section 354-D (stalking) of the Indian Penal Code (IPC) and Sections 67 and 67-A of the Information Technology (IT) Act has been registered.
The sub-inspector said the accused were presented before a local court that released them on bail. Efforts are on to arrest the fourth accused.
